This semester we start a new topic: theater, that’s why I’d like to share my perception of this art form.
To tell the truth, I’m not a big fan of theater. I do like going on plays once in a while, I like to dress up for such events, I love seeing good acting performances, but I literally know nothing about the art of theater.
My first visit to the theater happened when I was small, my grandmother took me to “Swan Lake” in Nizhegorodsky Opera House. I was truly amazed. Ballerinas were so airy and fragile as if they were porcelain statuette. The performance took my breath away, because everything was so harmonious! The costumes, the prop, the makeup, the music, the swans — everything was glorious. Unfortunately, soon I got bored of this magnificence. There were no words and as a child I didn’t understand much so I got a little tired of dances. Anyway, my first impression of ballet was off the charts, I still vividly remember beautiful sparkling white costumes and amazing music of Tchaikovsky. Some time later I even went to the Bolshoy theater to see this ballet! It sure was an experience of a lifetime.
The thing that I’m really crazy about is musical theater. I have watched dozens of musicals because this genre takes my breath away. I’ve always loved it, and my love started from Disney animated movies. I’m 21 now, but I still remember all princesses’ songs by heart. I often rewatch cold classics and I always look for something new. My favorite classical musical is My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn (it’s a must watch for everyone!), and my favorite new musical is La La Land by Damien Chazelle. I love musicals the most because this genre combines acting, singing and dancing. It gives me goosebumps when a good story is told through a great song, because in my opinion singing can convey emotions better than usual speech. Good songs from musicals are always catchy, and sometimes it is nice to sing along while rewatching a movie for the tenth time.
I’m really looking forward to extending my vocabulary so I could speak about theater as freely as I do in Russian. I’d love to discuss Broadway plays with my American friends and be able to convey my thoughts directly and accurately.
